STAMMERING

Stammering or Stuttering is a developmental disorder where the fluency of the person’s speech is disrupted. If untreated, it can significantly impact your social or work life.

TYPES OF STAMMERING

1. Developmental stammering:

The most common type seen during early childhood when speech and language skills are developing and if it is severe then there is a higher chance of the stammering persisting till adulthood.

2. Acquired or late onset stammering:

This disorder is relatively rare and is seen more in older children and adults as a result of physical, psychological (emotional) trauma.

CAUSES OF STAMMERING

There is no particular cause per se, but in some cases especially in developmental stutterers, factors such as genetics have been found to play a role.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF STAMMERING

  1. Anxious about conversations and deliberately avoids certain sounds or words .
  2. Deliberate prolongation of speech sounds
  3. Repetitions of sounds or syllables of words.
  4. Speech may become blocked or stuck
  5. Excessive use of fillers such as ‘um’, ‘uh’ etc.

TREATMENT FOR STAMMERING

An individual tailored treatment plan will be devised with you following your assessment by our qualified speech and language pathologist after and assessment is done. The goal of the treatment plan is to improve the client’s quality of life by providing individualised treatment strategies, continuous follow ups and regular feedback and generalization of treatment strategies into challenging daily activities.
